[:nl]De volgende inentingen hebben we laten laten zetten, of up-to-date brengen voor onze reis:

• hepatitis A+B,
• diphterie, tetanus, polio (DTP)
• buiktyphus
• gele koorts
• rabies (moet Lobke nog doen)

We nemen geen malaria-preventie, maar een behandeldosis voor het geval we malaria-verdachte symptomen hebben en niet direkt een arts kunnen opzoeken. Mochten we later in de reis toch door malariagebied komen, kunnen we ter plekke nog profylaxe inslaan. De discussie over het nut van een zelftest voor malaria en dengue is nog gaande…

Lobke heeft haar portie dengue in Haiti gehad, waardoor een volgende infectie een heftiger impact kan hebben. Een vaccinatie tegen dengue bestaat (nog) niet, dus blijft bescherming tegen muggensteken de enige remedie. We hebben beide een broek en sokken van Nosilife, wat zou moeten helpen muggen op afstand te houden.

Andere tropische ziektes zoals chikungunya, Chagas en leishmaniasis hopen we niet op te lopen. Omdat veel van deze ziektes vergelijkbare symptomen hebben, bereid Lobke een ‘beslisboom’ voor, om te raadplegen en in te schatten of we (al dan niet snel) medische zorg moeten zoeken.

We zijn sterk en gezond, maar een motorreis door afwisselend (soms extreem) klimaat, door weer en wind, dag en nacht, zal veel van ons vergen. Ook eten en drinken in verschillende culturen laat de meeste reizigers ook wat nauwer contact met de lokale toiletten opbouwen, dus we bereiden ons voor met een compacte, doch complete reisapotheek voor. Het volgende zullen we meenemen:

• Antibiotika (2 soorten)
• Pijnstillers en ontstekingremmers (2 soorten)
• Imodium en oraal rehydratie middel
• Brandwondenzalf en brandwondenpleisters
• Betadinezalf en alcohol ter ontsmetting

• Muggenspray met DEET
• Zonnenbrandcreme
• Reddingsdeken
• Tandzijde (multi-functioneel!), schaar, pincet, mes

We won’t take malaria preventive medicine, but a treatment dose in case we develop malaria suspected symptoms and are not able to directly consult a medical doctor. Should we travel through malaria affected areas at a later stage of the trip, we can still locally buy prophylaxis. The discussion about the usefulness of a self-test for malaria and dengue is still going on …

Lobke has had her share of dengue in Haiti; therefore a subsequent infection may have a more severe impact. A vaccine against dengue doesn’t exist (yet), so protecting against mosquito bites is the only option. We both have ‘Nosilife’ trousers and socks, which should help keeping mosquitoes at bay.

Other tropical diseases such as chikungunya, Chagas and leishmaniosis, we hope to avoid. Since many of these diseases have similar symptoms, Lobke prepares a ‚decision tree‘ to consult and to assess whether we should (quickly) seek medical care.

We are strong and healthy, but a motorcycle trip through various (sometimes extreme) climates, weather conditions, day and night, will demand a lot of our energy. Food and drinks in different cultures make most travelers getting to know the local toilets more closely, so we are preparing for a compact, but complete travel medicine kit. We will carry the following with us:
